A Geography of Time

Dr. Robert Levine

There are profound cultural differences in how people keep, use and think about time. Social psychologist Robert Levine will talk about different ways people keep time, what they consider wasted time and define as doing nothing, the curious ways time is bought and sold and how time can be an expression of control and power. He will also talk about his studies of the pace of life across the United States and around the world.

March brings us a wonderful speaker from Fresno State by the name of Robert Levine. Did you realize that he is the outgoing President of the Western Psychological Association? Right here in Fresno! Anyhow, Dr. Levine has spent his career researching time and its perception and the interesting ways that it may be measured and culturally thought out. Time is perceived so differently in Hawaii (an 11:00Am meeting may be pushed back to 12:00 with little or no worries brah!), whereas other places taking your sweet time will earn you many angry honking drivers should you not accelerate your car quickly enough once a red light turns green. What happens if a couple perceives time differently? How about an ADHD child or a person with PTSD? And time when you are manic vs. depressed? How does this all affect your day and functioning? These are a few of the questions I have for Dr. Levine and I hope that you will join me in learning more about this limited commodity by sharing a little of your time with us!
