EMDR: Basic Tenets, Recent Developments, Applications

This presentation will address the basic foundation concepts of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The presentation will cover when to use it, what it does, how it works, recent applications, knowing when to refer a client for EMDR, and outcomes.
Educational Objective: Identify one indication that EMDR Treatment protocol would be useful as an adjunctive treatment to on-going traditional talk therapy.
About the Presenter:
Born and raised in the Midwest on a hobby farm, Dr. Nicole Luk draws on a wide variety of life experiences in her practice as a psychologist. Dr. Luk attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she obtained a B.A. in Psychology and Social Work. She worked for a few years as a juvenile correctional officer, treatment counselor for high-risk youth, and legal assistant in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. She then attended the University of Denver and earned an M.A. in Forensic Psychology in 2003. In 2008 she graduated from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Her training included psychodynamic conceptualization and intervention, and neuropsychological assessment. She completed an APA-Accredited internship with the Central California Internship Consortium at the W. Gary Cannon Psychological Service Center in Fresno, California, and became licensed in 2009. In 2014 she completed training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and became a Certified Therapist in 2015. Dr. Luk typically treats adults with personality disorders. She has worked in a number of private and public settings, facilitates several Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Groups, conducts a wide range of psychological assessments, and in the process of becoming a Certified HeartMath Clinician. Dr. Luk is a member of the American Psychological Association and San Joaquin Valley Psychological Association. She is employed part-time for the State of California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and has a part-time private practice in Fresno, California. When she is not working with patients, Nicole is an avid skier in the winter, swimmer during the summer, and a year-round tennis player.
