The Self

Evolutionary, Ontological, Experiential,

and Psychodynamic Influences

Presented by

Shelley Stokes, Ph.D. and Errol Leifer, Ph.D., ABPP

Subjectively, interpersonally, socially, clinically and therapeutically the concept, experience and perception of SELF forms a core aspect of how we are seen and see.

This 2-day offering by Shelley Stokes and Errol Leifer is comprised of three time periods of presentation and one of interactional explorations of the many variables and processes comprising this foundational concept and experience of life; the SELF.

During more formal presentations we will journey into contributions for the creation of the SELF from how our sensory, motor and central nervous systems historically and ontologically evolved and are evolving; genetic and epigenetic factors; early and ongoing interactional forces of brain structure and experience of environment; attachment phenomena; establishment and functioning of evolving self-boundaries in language, thought, feeling, perception and memory; the realms of explicit and implicit self-elements will be examined in the context of the role of consciousness; the variables and vagaries of self-experience and expression in the realms of fantasy and overt conduct, and the implications of these factors for mutual real-self expression in psychotherapy.

Interweaved throughout, we explore the variables of real-self expression in contrast to alterations in the nature of that expression and the factors that facilitate or work against authenticity of self-expression.

For the interactional exploration, we will engage at first in a dialogue exchange between the presenters that will be expanded to include the participants in this seminar.
