Multiplicities and the Development of the Self: Relationships, Construction of Knowing, and Cerebral Hemisphere Processing Related to Value Construction

Presented by

Errol Leifer, PhD, ABPP, ABN

Shelley Stokes, PhD

The San Joaquin Valley Psychological Association (SJVPA) invites you to attend a continuing education event presented by two preeminent psychologists discussing the development and pathology of the Self from psychoanalytic and neurobiological perspectives.  Participants will gain further knowledge about why humans are in an unending struggle in how, why, and where a value perspective is emphasized as what is preferred to be true, and gain deeper knowledge about the multiplicity of the self and its implications for emotional stability, and sense of self-cohesiveness.

Objectives:

1. Participants will demonstrate increased understanding of the role of language in constructing and deconstructing knowledge.

2. Participants will describe how knowing is based on some form of interpreted processing of information.

3. Participants will compare how each hemisphere of the brain has its own inclinations in processing information and in creating different phenomenological emphases or realities of knowing.

4. Participants will discuss how the manner of Attending by each cerebral hemisphere creates multiplicities of knowing.

5. Participants will explain the dynamics and pervasiveness of the “fear of being real” and the accompanying loss of a sense of agency.

6. Participants will discuss and demonstrate how the impact of relational trauma and the associative and dissociative processes affect the maintenance of self-coherence.

7. Participants will describe the importance of connecting with deeper aspects of the self through internal reflection, dreams, creativity, imagination, and play.

8. Participants will discuss in application, the implications of the “normal” and the “pathological” multiplicity of the self in intimate relationships, and in psychotherapy.
